Prominent Mexico City-based hospitality company Grupo Gula is poised to make its mark in the United States with the upcoming launch of its first San Diego location, Punta Mar restaurant, coming soon to Encinitas.
Grupo Gula operates 35 restaurants around Mexico, including popular spots like Barracruda and Barrita Del Mar in Mexico City. Grupo Gula owner Lalo González has taken over the 2,000 square-foot restaurant space that last housed Piña on South Coast Highway in Encinitas for the opening of Punta Mar.
Punta Mar will feature a redesigned, mostly outdoor space, with a menu centered around Mexican mariscos and other seafood dishes. Diners can look forward to items like tostadas topped with marinated mahi mahi, grilled octopus, shrimp aguachile verde, and diverse offerings like birria pizza and garlic oil grilled ribeye steak.
From the bar, expect a lineup of over-the-top micheladas, including a variety spiked with tequila and featuring a chamoy and caramelized sesame rim, garnished with skewered octopus tentacles. Additionally, the bar will serve margaritas and mezcal drinks, as well as beer and wine.
